PhD candicates and scientists often face unclear priorities and
motivation problems. “Getting Things Done” shows ways to solve both challenges. The workshop on November 9th 2009 by Jens Oberender started with an introduction to the method in general. Subsequently, the participants discussed how the GTD principles can make their everyday life better. Open questions on the concrete application of these principles were collected on cards, before they were clustered and discussed.
When dealing with professional and ethical behavior, complex questions
can arise very quickly. A Code of Ethics provides a consensus created by experts, which can guide to professional practices for a specific career path. The Institute of Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE) provides
such behavior recommendations for engineers and computer scientists. Moreover, there is a special version for questions on ethical practices in software engineering. The talk on June 2nd 2009 by Jens Oberender outlined the emergence of

Unter diesem Titel fand am 28. Juni 2007 das IEEE Special zum Thema Backup statt. Unser Mitglied Jens Oberender stellte nach einer Einführung verschiedene Möglichkeiten für Privatnutzer vor. In einer anschliessenden Diskussion wurden Erfahrungsberichte der Teilnehmer ausgetauscht.
Kurzzusammenfassung des Vortrags:
Datensicherheit und Langzeitarchivierung sind eine Herausforderung für
Industrie und Privatpersonen. Best-Practice-Lösungen, die hochverfügbare Hardware und komplexe Software beinhalten, erfordern große Investitionen für Einrichtung und Wartung. Speichermedien für den Privatgebrauch haben nur eine begrenzte Lebenszeit, so dass Konzepte für das Auffrischen von Medien und Migrieren von Daten zu neuen Softwareversionen nötig sind.
Am 11. Januar 2007 fand das IEEE Special zum Thema Ruby und Ruby on Rails statt.
Unser Mitglied Matthias Lüdtke gab dabei eine kurze Einführung in die Programmiersprache Ruby und implementierte daraufhin im Rahmen des Vortrags eine kleine Webanwendung.

On the 5/17 we were honored by ex-student branch member Tobias Hilbig from Munich, who shared his knowledge about crypto-currencies and so called “Smart Contracts”. He gave a technical introduction on how the blockchain functions, how crypto-currencies, especially Bitcoin, developed and how realistic the relevance of this topic might be in the future. All of this was shown with examples of transactions and multiple statistics. Also an insight into the Do’s and Don’ts of trading crypto-currencies was given.
